7. Sightseeing in London, City of London

BEST DAY OUT IN THE CITY OF LONDON: Just, London

So much to see in London, it’s impossible to pick a favourite. Instead, top travel blogger Maria Perrett gives us hers below.

We were too torn between the deer in Richmond park, taking a dip in Hampstead Heath ponds and wandering along the Thames Path. The most popular reason to visit London is for a royal day out and to see the incredible landmarks in London.

best day out in england

One of my favourite days in England was spending time visiting museums all over London. Museums are not everyone’s cup of tea and I get that, but that certainly did not stop me from breaking off from my friend group for the day since they wanted to watch football in the pub.
Traveling to the United Kingdom, especially London, is something that people just do not do where I am from. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania in America, I lived a two-hour drive from a real city with an international airport. When I say there is nothing around and nothing to do, I wholeheartedly mean it.
Because of that, visiting these massive, world-class museums was a huge privilege for me and I wanted to soak it all in! I never dreamed I would be able to visit the British Museum, the National Gallery or Tate Modern, etc. and that is what made the day so special for me.
Though there are many amazing things that London can offer, checking out at least one museum is a must on your trip. Chances are that it will be raining and when it does, find the museum closest to you and learn something new!

8. Relax on the beaches in Cornwall

BEST DAY OUT IN CORNWALL: St Ives

Oh Cornwall. It’s the Brits’ most favourite holiday destination, and for good reason. You only need to spend a day there to realise how great it is. In fact, we’d recommend spending a whole week there and taking every day as a Cornwall day trip.

Polperro in Cornwall

You could visit King Arthur’s Castle and Merlin’s Cave in Tintagel. Cycle the Camel Trail, learn to surf on Fistral Beach, and visit the world famous Eden Project. As you’ll read below though, the top day out in Cornwall for many is a day trip to St Ives – a stunning town in the heart of Cornwall, with a wonderful amount of things to do.

Us Brits love Cornwall – but how much do you know? Have a go at our Cornwall quiz to see how much you know, but you might want to do some revision with our days out in Cornwall guide first. If you really want to study, then check out our facts about Cornwall too.

“A visit to St Ives is one of the best possible days out in England. St Ives is a small town in the south-west of Cornwall – once a fishing village, the town now attracts thousands of tourists each year.
St Ives has five spectacular beaches to choose between. Depending on the season, you can either take a lovely walk along the beaches or have a beach day. Porthminster beach is one of the best beaches in St Ives. The beach features crystal clear water and gorgeous soft sand backed by palm trees. Porthmeor beach is a fantastic place to learn to surf, go rockpool fishing and rock climbing. Both beaches have been awarded blue flag status for their cleanliness.
St Ives town is one of the star attractions for visitors. You’ll find everything on the winding cobbled streets from numerous art galleries to independent shops. For food, St Ives has a full range of fantastic restaurants. I recommend either the Porthminster restaurant with incredible views onto Porthminster beach if you want to splash out a little. For a cheaper bite to eat, St Ives has some of the best fish and chip shops in the UK. Harbour fish and chips are the best place to eat in. If you fancy the takeaway experience, head to the balancing Eel. Mind the seagulls as they love pinching food!
If you’re an art lover, St Ives is home to one of the best art galleries in the UK – The Tate as well as the Barbara Hepworth museum and plenty of art galleries.Whatever you fancy doing on your trip to St Ives, the town has something for everyone!”

9. Visit Ambleside in the Lake District, Cumbria

BEST DAY OUT IN CUMBRIA: The Lake District

There are so many great things to do in the Lake District in Cumbria that it’s kinda difficult to pick just the one. Thankfully we have top travel blogger Fiona Boyle from Travelling Thirties to narrow it down for us. She recommends Ambleside as the absolute top thing to do in the county, thanks to it being a hub of the Lake District.

See our list of the best days out in Cumbria for all the family here.

“If you are looking for a perfect day out in England look no further than Ambleside in the Lake District. Ambleside is a small town but is growing into a bustling hub in the Lake District. No matter the season, you are bound to have an amazing day out in Ambleside.
From boat tours, to walks around Lake Windermere (or at least part of Lake Windermere), paddling around in your own little row boat to exploring the town centre or having a go at mini golf, there is plenty to keep you entertained for a day, a weekend or even a week.
I highly recommend joining a boat tour and cruises for 15 minutes over Lake Windermere to Wray Castle. From here you can either visit the castle or you can talk a walk around the lake. From Wray Castle you can walk 4 miles to Claife Viewing station, board the boat again and spend some time exploring Bowness on Windermere before heading back to Ambleside.
A visit to Ambleside is a must if you are looking for a perfect day out in England.”

On the edge of the Peak District, Matlock Bath is nestled in the beautiful Derwent Valley in Derbyshire. For amazing views of the valley, start your day with a cable car ride up to the Heights of Abraham. This tourist attraction high up on the hillside is home to the entrances of the Great Masson and Great Rutland caverns. Cavern guides take you deep into the caverns where you learn all about lead mining and the history of Matlock Bath.
After you’ve spent a few hours exploring the Heights of Abraham, take the cable car back down for a leisurely stroll along the beautiful riverside gardens.
If you want to learn more about lead mining, visit the Peak District Lead Mining Museum for a mine tour and gold panning experience.
Alternatively if you have children who love theme parks, spend the day enjoying the rides at Gulliver’s Kingdom.
From the peaceful riverside walks on one side of the river, cross over to the other side for the hustle and bustle of the promenade. Spend some pennies in the amusement arcade or visit the Matlock Bath Aquarium and Exhibitions.
A visit to Matlock Bath isn’t complete without fish and chips, followed by ice cream and there’s certainly plenty to choose from.

12. Wander round the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset

BEST DAY OUT IN DORSET: Isle of Purbeck

Dorset is best known for it’s incredible Jurassic Coast, and the iconic Durdle Door. They usually top any ‘best day out in England’ post. But, let’s think outside the box a little…

Emily Luxton from the brilliant Dorset Travel Guide recommends you visit Purbeck for a day out.

One of my favourite days out in England has to be the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. I grew up in nearby Weymouth and spent many happy childhood days out exploring that beautiful and mysterious peninsula!

Despite the name, the ‘Isle’ isn’t actually an island at all. It’s a peninsula of land between Poole and Weymouth, surrounded by the sea on three sides. This means there’s lots of amazing coastline to explore, from the dreamy sand beaches at Studland to the rocky cliffs near Worth Matravers.

One of the must-sees is Old Harry Rocks. This is a series of chalk rock stacks right near the beginning of the famous Jurassic Coast. Interestingly, the stacks line up perfectly with The Needles on the Isle of Wight, because they were once connected by the same chalk band.

At the centre of the Isle you’ll also find of Dorset’s best-known attractions: Corfe Castle. This striking ruin in the Purbeck hills was built over one thousand years ago and destroyed during the English Civil War. No day out in Purbeck is complete without a trip to the castle and the neighbouring village of the same name. You can even take a ride on an antique steam train from the seaside town of Swanage to the castle and back!

There’s so much to do on a day out in the Isle of Purbeck. Go walking in the countryside or along the dramatic coastline, explore the cute villages, indulge in a pub lunch or a Dorset cream tea, or go fossil hunting in Kimmeridge Bay.”

15. Visit Rye, East Sussex

BEST DAY OUT IN EAST SUSSEX: Rye

Brighton seems like the obvious choice for the best day out in East Sussex, and of course, we love it there. The beach, the pier, the lanes and the amazing restaurants there make it a great place for a day out in England, but, let’s think a little differently shall we?

Let’s move these best days out in England away from the cities…

Here’s why top travel blogger Sarah Camp thinks Rye should be our favourite day out in East Sussex.

how to enjoy england

A visit to Rye is like a step back in time to a child’s fairy tale and makes for the perfect day out in England. This small medieval town dates back to the 1100s and is rich in history with endless things to see and do!
Stroll down a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and admire the half-timbered buildings as you wander around town. Browse through unique shops ranging from art, handmade goods, furniture, and antiques before stopping for tea at one of many tearooms dotted throughout town, like Fletchers, The Cobbles, Haydens, and The Outlook.
Once you’ve taken a rest, venture out to see the Ypres Castle, the Rye Model, and the Rye Museum, and get an inside look at how this town was once used as coastal defence during the 11th century. Be sure to visit the vintage arcade above the Rye Model, and on clear days, visit St Mary’s Cathedral to climb the church tower for sweeping views of Rye and beyond.
There are many unique places to dine at in Rye. Head to Mariner’s Fish & Chips for takeaway to enjoy by the river, or get your fill of cozy at The Globe Inn, The Ship Inn, or the Standard. If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, head to the Mermaid Inn – rebuilt in 1420. There have even been reported ghost sightings here!
Only around 2 hours from London by matrain or car, Rye makes for one of the best days out in England.

17. Road trip in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire

BEST DAY OUT IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE: Cotswolds

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Gloucestershire, you could explore a magical woodland in The Forest of Dean, or, you could go for every Americans’ favourite, and enjoy a great day out in the Cotswolds.

The Cotswolds are where you’ll find some of the most beautiful villages and romantic places in England. Set in the rolling hills and lush green countryside, maybe the most beautiful village of them all is Bourton-on-the-Water.

A row of picturesque Cotswold cottages in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, UK.

It’s known locally as ‘Little Venice’ because of the small bridges that run across the river Windrush that flows through the village centre. The chocolate box houses are built from the local honey-coloured Cotswolds stone, and there are many thatched roofed cottages in the area.

Just 4 miles away is the market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. You’ll find antique stores in the centre along with art galleries and craft shops. This is also a great starting point for walking the Cotswolds countryside. Whether you want to take a road trip through the Cotswolds, or take a wander, it really is one of the most beautiful parts of England.

18. Explore Camden in Greater London

BEST DAY OUT IN GREATER LONDON: Camden

When I was in a teenager it was my dream to live and work in Camden. I can vividly remember standing on the corner and wishing it to happen. And it did!

I spent two years there and it remains one of my favourite places for a day out in London. You can wander round the markets and along the canal to Little Venice. You can walk up to Primrose Hill and enjoy the view, and you can enjoy the shops along the way too. Maybe get a piercing or a tattoo?!

And if you’re out till the evening then Camden has a great nightlife too. You can’t beat a hot dog from a street seller at 2am!

Camden is a great idea for a day out in London with a teenager, too.

19. Visit metropolitan Manchester in Greater Manchester

BEST DAY OUT IN GREATER MANCHESTER: Manchester

Well, a day out in Manchester is the obvious choice for the best day out in Greater Manchester. You have all the shops, and shopping centres you could possibly want, and it’s home to one of the best ski slopes in England too.

We’ve asked one of our favourite travel bloggers to tell us why she thinks Manchester is one of the best days out in England…

best days out in england

“Located in North West England, Manchester is well known for its industrial background. Most of the buildings are old warehouses which gives it this very ‘New York’ look. As a matter of fact, it’s often chosen as a filming location instead of NYC. Even in the Netflix series, The Crown. The best place to discover this industrial heritage is the Northern Quarter. It’s home to a lot of bars and restaurants, making it an excellent place to visit during the day and at night.
If you love street art, you are in for a treat! Some of the most incredible murals in England are located in Manchester, especially in Ancoats and the Northern Quarter.
Manchester is also an excellent destination for music lovers. It is the birthplace of a lot of very famous English rock bands including Oasis and the Smiths.

If you are interested in knowing more about the history of the city, opt for a walking tour around the city centre. The local guide will bring you to all the main landmarks and tell you everything you need to know.
Make sure to also visit the Gay Village and Castlefield. At the end of your day in Manchester, head to Cathedral gardens and grab a drink at the Old Wellington. It’s one of the most beautiful pubs in town and prices are very reasonable.”

20. Explore the New Forest, Hampshire

BEST DAY OUT IN HAMPSHIRE: The New Forest

As my home county I’m a big fan of all the great things to do in Hampshire. If I had to pick the ultimate day out in Hampshire though, I’d choose the New Forest.

The New Forest is around 5 miles from Southampton. It’s a beautiful National Park filled with walks, cycle trails and water fun.

Visit and you can see the pretty villages the New Forest is known for and the wonderful cosy pubs in the New Forest too. Here you can go paddleboarding in some of the best areas in Hampshire. Stay a bit longer and you can enjoy some of the top places to stay in the New Forest too.

It’s a tough one to decide the best day out in Hampshire thanks to the great coastal walks here, the wonder of Hayling Island and how much I love living in Southsea, in Portsmouth, but the New Forest would have to be it.

21. Enjoy the Wye Valley in Herefordshire

BEST DAY OUT IN HEREFORDSHIRE: Wye Valley

The Wye Valley comes top of the best days out in Herefordshire. As one of England’s top Area’s of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the landscape here is just stunning.

You can wander the banks of the River Wye as it flows through the county, take out a kayak or canoe and traverse by water or hike up to Yat Rock to see the area from above. The Wye Valley is known for its vibrant wildlife, and for the long standing heritage too.

“The Wye Valley AONB was designated to protect its dramatic limestone gorges and native woodlands, its impressive geology, its historic legacies of hillforts, castles and the first Cistercian Abbey in Wales, and its wildlife.”

22. Visit Harry Potter and Co, Hertfordshire

BEST DAY OUT IN HERTFORDSHIRE: Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Of course, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is without a doubt the number one day out in Hertfordshire. Millions visit every year for the best Harry Potter day out in England money can buy.

days out adults

Visit and you can see the sets from Harry Potter, the costumes, the animatronics and even the Knight Bus too.

Visiting ‘Harry Potter world’ in Hertfordshire is one of the best days out in England, never mind Hertfordshire.

23. Road tripping on the Isle of Wight

BEST DAY OUT IN ISLE OF WIGHT: Osborne House

The Isle of Wight is one of our favourite counties here on Day Out in England (see our post on 14 Best Days Out on the Isle of Wight). There’s just so much to do over there, and with crossing the water it kind of feels like a bigger adventure too.

The best day out on the Isle of Wight is a toss up between the village and beaches in Shanklin, and Queen Victoria’s Osborne House. Difficult decision.

Let’s go with Osborne House as it’s one of my most memorable experiences in England.

day out isle of wight

This is where Queen Victoria retreated to after the death of Prince Albert, until her dying day. Before that it’d been a great family home for Victoria and Albert, and they raised their children there over the summer. You can see the kids’ playhouse, see the veggie patch, the play area, and, best of all, go down to their own private beach that looks back to Portsmouth in Hampshire.

You can get an ice cream and chill in a deck chair to admire the view.

Back at the house, there are tens of rooms to look round and enjoy the hundreds (maybe thousands) of artefacts and antiques there. You can see the actual bed where Queen Victoria would sleep!

If you love the Isle of Wight too, try our quiz!

24. Visit Whitstable in Kent

BEST DAY OUT IN KENT: Whitstable

Margate is probably the best known day out in Kent, but there’s so much more to the county than that. Leave the famous Dreamland, and a day out in Dover, for a day out in Whitstable.

It’s top travel bloggers’ Caroline Keyzor’s most recommended day out in all of Kent.

Whitstable is a charming fishing and harbour town located on the north coast of Kent, and is one of our favourite days out in England.
Whitstable is very famous for its rich maritime history and excellent seafood scene. The town is a great spot for foodies with many busy fresh fish markets and cute oyster shacks in the harbour, plus some gourmet beachfront restaurants that serve hot and cold seafood platters with lobster. Whitstable also holds an annual weekend oyster festival every summer with hundreds of food and drink stalls, live music and a town parade.
Other things you can do in Whitstable include taking a walk along the coast which is lined with pastel coloured beach huts, or visit nearby Harbour Street which is filled with craft and antique shops, independent galleries and cute cafes. History lovers will enjoy Whitstable Castle or the Whitstable Community Museum & Gallery – which displays the history of the local oyster trade.
End your day trip with a drink at the Old Neptune, which is the most famous pub in town. It is located right on the beach, so you can enjoy a delicious pint of locally brewed oyster stout beer or wine, and eat fish and chips with a beautiful view of the sun setting over the ocean.

25. Be beside the seaside in Blackpool, Lancashire

BEST DAY OUT IN LANCASHIRE: Blackpool

If you’re looking for the best day out in Lancashire, then you need to head to the seaside resort of Blackpool. It’s one of the most iconic days out in all of England.

Visit Blackpool for the day and you can enjoy the old-school amusement park, complete with vintage wooden roller coasters and candy floss too. And you can’t leave without going up the Blackpool Tower!

We’ve got an awesome guide to making the most out of your day trip to Blackpool. Make sure to read it before you go!

26. Enjoy a spa day in Leicestershire

BEST DAY OUT IN LEICESTERSHIRE: Ragdale Hall

My favourite day out in Leicestershire is definitely Ragdale Hall. In fact, I love it so much I’d love to spend more than a day there.

As one of the biggest and best spas in England it has six pools to enjoy, huge grounds, loads of classes and a cafe serving Afternoon Tea too. There’s also a restaurant and some shops on site too.

If you’re looking to relax in the beautiful Leicestershire countryside, then this is the day out for you!

27. Relax in the Lincolnshire Wolds, Lincolnshire

BEST DAY OUT IN LINCOLNSHIRE: Lincolnshire Wolds

The Lincolnshire Wolds are the must-see attraction in Lincolnshire. Lining the coast, the Wolds are a beautiful part of England, with sandy beaches and lush growth. As one of England’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty there’s a lot of natural beauty to enjoy here.

While you’re in the area though, do check out Lincoln – it’s a city full of history and character that I think you’ll love. Also, Hibaldstow is one of the most popular places in England for a spot of skydiving.

“The Lincolnshire Wolds lie in the north-eastern quarter of the county of Lincolnshire, mid-way between Lincoln and the coast, surrounded by the relatively flat fens, coastal marsh and the Lincoln Clay Vale. The Wolds is the highest land in eastern England between Kent and Yorkshire – there are fine views to the Pennines in the west, and the coast to the east.
The AONB comprises an area of 558 km² (216 miles²), while the wider Lincolnshire Wolds Character/Natural Area incorporates the two neighbouring areas of the ‘Spilsby Crescent’ to the south and the remaining chalk uplands to the north.

28. Beatles Tour of Liverpool, Merseyside

BEST DAY OUT IN MERSEYSIDE: Liverpool

England is home to some of the most celebrated icons in the history of the musical world, The Beatles. To rejoice in the harmony and rhythm of the Beatles, take a walk around the city of Liverpool in the north-west of England, the place where the famous musicians first met.

best day out in each county

The city also hosts a great number of music lovers every year at the National Trust-owned childhood homes of the great John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Finish your trip by heading to the Beatles Story, the world’s largest permanent exhibition which displays the history of musical stars and the Cavern Club where the Beatles first used to perform in their early days of career.

There’s so much to do in Liverpool, it’s more than just The Beatles, but it’s a great place to start!

Read our post on the best days out in Merseyside for more inspiration for your trip.

29. Wandering the North Norfolk Coast, Norfolk

BEST DAY OUT IN NORFOLK: North Norfolk Coast

The Norfolk Broads are probably what Norfolk is best known for – and a visit to Sandringham of course – but I’d actually say that a trip to the North Norfolk Coast makes for the best day out in Norfolk.

Norfolk Way

There are loads of fun things to do in Norfolk, but the number one spot goes to hiking along the coast past Sheringham, Cromer, – and the like. Also, Holkham Beach for the sunset.

I spent a few days in the summer of 2020 road tripping between the villages lining the North Norfolk Coast and found the uniqueness of each one fascinating. There are some lovely beaches here too.

30. Afternoon Tea and museums in York, North Yorkshire

BEST DAY OUT IN NORTH YORKSHIRE: York

If you’ve never visited York before, then you my friend are MISSING OUT.

Hot step it up there to one of the coolest and most characteristic cities in all of England. Wander the Shambles, said to have inspired Diagon Alley. Go to the Jorvik Viking Centre, and admire the York Minster Cathedral – stunning from the inside and out.

For more ideas on what to do in North Yorkshire, check out this post, and if you’re looking for day trip inspiration around York, click here.

And, if you think you know it all, then see what you can score on the BIG Yorkshire quiz.

“One of the best days out in England is a trip to the Roman city of York. Almost exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh, York was founded by the ancient Romans and has mentions to it’s historic past all across the city.
Combining the best of its heritage with modern British life, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time as you walk down intertwining streets such as The Shambles, learn more about the cities Viking past at Jorvik Viking Centre and visit The York Dungeon for horrors but BEWARE!
But then you only have to step on to the main street and the cities thriving cultural scene will bring you right back to the present, with high-street shops, art galleries and comedy clubs.
On your York weekend break, you can walk around the city, via it is City Walls and it is well worth joining the walk at least some of the way around the city, to get a proper feel for the city.
The most iconic monument in the city is the huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, which has medieval stained glass and functioning bell towers. You can spend a good few hours in here wandering around, admiring the stunning architecture and visiting some of the exhibitions.
For a spot to eat, head to the world-famous Betty’s Tea Room, for a cup of English Breakfast tea and a scone or two. There are also a myriad of restaurants, cafes, and bars in the city, that are well worth a visit after a long day exploring.
York is an amazing city to visit in the UK and it should certainly be top of your list!

31. Visit a castle in Northamptonshire

BEST DAY OUT IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE: Althorp Estate

There are a lot of lovely outdoor spaces in Northamptonshire, but for the county’s best day out, visit the Althorp Estate.

This has been the Spencer family stately home since 1508, and by Spencer family, yes, we mean Lady Diana. This is where she grew up before marrying Prince Charles. You can wander around inside, enjoy the grounds, and visit the onsite coffee shop too. A great day out for royalists, or not…

“The Estate encompasses cottages, farms, woodlands and villages, which combine to give a rich mix of landscapes, habitats and activities.
The management of the Estate seeks to balance commercially based activity, with good stewardship of the landscape, wildlife conservation and a recognition that the countryside is increasingly used for leisure, recreation and sport. The aim is to promote a thriving rural environment, which makes a positive contribution to the local economy.

32. Visit an island in Northumberland

BEST DAY OUT IN NORTHUMBERLAND: Lindisfarne

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne on the glorious Northumberland coast is our top choice for a day out in Northumberland, thanks to top travel blogger, A Social Nomad.

Let’s see why she thinks this is the best day out in England…

“The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, located off the glorious coast of Northumberland – England’s most northerly county – is a stunning place for a day out in England. You will, however, have to plan your day carefully.
The island is reached by a causeway that sits underwater at certain points of the tide and the crossing can be dangerous. It’s easy to visit most of the island within a single day – visitors should start with Lindisfarne Priory, managed by English Heritage – where you’ll learn of the stories and legends of this important centre of Christianity for many centuries. From the Priory it’s a short walk to Lindisfarne Castle, a National Trust property that was once a private home and which also has a stunning garden within its grounds.
Holy Island is famous for wildlife and sea life and you’ll get a good view on this if you bring a picnic and take a walk around part of the coastal path.
Before leaving be sure to visit St Aidan’s Winery and taste Lindisfarne Mead – made famous by the monks of old, there are many different flavours, all with free samples and of course bottles to buy and take home.”

33. Visit Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire

BEST DAY OUT IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: Wollaton Hall

There are so many days out in Nottinghamshire to explore but Woolaton Hall gets the number one crown thanks to our friends over at Book It, Let’s Go.

Nottingham Castle was the starting point of the British Civil War in August 1642 and is a must see on any visit to Nottingham. Learn about the fable of Robin Hood during your stay and check out the tributes to Nottingham’s favourite outlaw all around the city. Underneath the city is a network of hand-carved caves, which you can see by venturing into the cellars of some of the oldest pubs in England, The Bell Inn, Ye Olde Salutation and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem.
One of the best things to do in Nottingham is a visit to Wollaton Hall, a grade 1 listed Elizabethan Mansion built between 1580-1588 and set in over 500 acres of parkland making it a great day out in England. The grounds provide fantastic photo opportunities for nature and wildlife enthusiasts because within the grounds there are free roaming deer and in the heart of the gardens is a beautiful lake with ducks and swans. In the summer Wollaton Hall hosts many family friendly events and activities from park runs to outdoor concerts and movie nights.
Wollaton Hall is also home to the Nottingham Natural History Museum, which is free to enter and between many extraordinary fossils, stuffed animals and display cases is a fascinating history of the hall. For £10 per person you can take the daily tour of the hall and see the reconstructed grand upper rooms with panoramic views over the city and descend into the Tudor kitchens, wine cellars and caves beneath the hall. In the old stables is the Nottingham industrial museum which showcases the five key industries that made Nottingham famous around the world.

40. Enjoy the market town of Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk

BEST DAY OUT IN SUFFOLK: Bury St Edmonds

Bury St Edmonds tops the list according to travel blogger Shobha George, but if you want some more ideas for the best days out in Suffolk check out our article on the link.

A market town in Suffolk, Bury St Edmunds is small and charming with some medieval buildings still present such as the Guildhall dating from the 12th century. The town is named after St Edmund, King of East Anglia and the first patron saint of England.
As you would expect from a market town, Bury St Edmunds has good shopping facilities including a pedestrianised central area. In addition to the big stores, there’s also boutiques, cafes and restaurants to occupy your time.
The town centre has the ruins of an Abbey surrounded by beautiful gardens including a small charming Japanese garden. The Abbey is where the barons who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta prayed met in 1214 as part of their plot to force the king to grant them more rights. Next door to the ruins, there’s a Cathedral and a church which is the burial spot of King Henry VIII’s favourite sister, Mary (a former Queen of France). If you climb to the top of the Cathedral, you will have fantastic views over the town and countryside.
Other places to visit in Bury St Edmunds are the Greene King Brewery which in addition to brewery tours has a museum dedicated to the history of brewing in Bury St Edmunds, The Nutshell which is the smallest pub in England and Moyses Hall Museum which has a random collection relating to almost a 1000 years of Suffolk history. Run by the National Trust, the Theatre Royal is the only surviving Regency theatre in the country. Nearby Ickworth Hall, the Italianate palace and parkland home of the Earls of Bristol, is also a National Trust property.
There are frequent trains from London to Bury St Edmunds via Cambridge which take around two and a half hours for the journey. The distance from London to Bury St Edmunds is 132 kilometres which will take about 2 hours to drive by car.

BEST DAY OUT IN TYNE AND WEAR: The Quayside

Quayside is one of the most popular parts of Newcastle. Until recently it was the city’s industrial hub, all warehouses and factories. But today it is Newcastle’s cultural centre, packed with restaurants, bars, art galleries and more, in a picturesque location along the waterfront.

Newcasstle city Skyline through Sage Gateshead windows with River Tyne, Tyne Bridge and other buildings at Newcastle Quayside in view

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is here, connecting Quayside with Gateshead over the Tyne. The bridge opened in 2001 and is famous for its tilt, with the pedestrian walkways folding up into the air at certain times to allow boats to pass on the river below. If you’re spending a few days in Newcastle or are looking for somewhere to enjoy a meal or a drink, then Quayside is the place to head.

Visiting this area is one of the best days out in Tyne and Wear.

BEST DAY OUT IN WARWICKSHIRE: Stratford Upon Avon

Warwick Castle might be the first place that comes to mind, when you think of Warwickshire, but we’re giving the best day out in Warwickshire accolade to Stratford Upon Avon.

BEST DAY OUT IN WEST YORKSHIRE: Haworth

If you’re a literary fan then you can cast Leeds and Wakefield aside, and Saltaire and Holmfirth – Haworth is where you want to be.

The village of Haworth in West Yorkshire is of great cultural and traditional value in the English world. Haworth has found its position in the great writing of Emily Bronte, in Wuthering Heights. It is a romance and psychological fiction novel and Haworth is the village where Emily Bronte lived, along with her sisters.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Haworth-1024x683.jpg

Her historical home, after standing against the mayhems of weather, still stands to its root serving as a museum.
