Guide to a Brilliant Day Out at West Wittering Beach

If you’re dreaming of golden sand, gentle waves and that classic English seaside vibe without the tacky arcades, West Wittering Beach should be right at the top of your list.

West Wittering Beach

This gorgeous Blue Flag beach, tucked away on the south coast near Chichester, in West Sussex, is the perfect spot for a relaxed, no-fuss day by the sea.

Here’s how to plan the perfect day out at West Wittering Beach from parking tips to sunset spots.

Get there early!

First up: West Wittering gets busy. Really busy. The car park can fill up by mid-morning in summer and bank holidays – and once it’s full, that’s it.

Parking at West Wittering Beach

Top tip: Pre-book your parking online (they usually close bookings by 11pm the night before) and aim to arrive by 8am if you can. Bring a flask of tea, a pastry and watch the beach wake up if it gets you there earlier – it’s honestly one of the best bits of the day.

Set up camp and hit the water

Once you’ve parked up, stroll over the dunes and pick your spot. Some people love pitching up near the pretty beach huts; others head further down to find a quieter patch of sand. Either way, there’s plenty of space – especially at low tide.

The shallow water is perfect for paddling, swimming or simply splashing about. Pack a bucket and spade, a towel, some sun protection, and any toys and games you might want for the day.

Coffee breaks and picnics at West Wittering Beach

By mid-morning, you’ll probably be ready for a snack. There’s a Beach Café near the entrance for coffee, sandwiches, fish and chips and ice creams – just expect a queue when the weather’s good. That’s why a picnic is your best friend here.

From the editor…

We love a day trip to West Wittering Beach when we know there’s guaranteed sun. Last time I went I shared a fish and chips with my son, but you can save money by bringing along a picnic. One of the best things about West Wittering is that the sea is so shallow, it’s great for paddling. The soft sand is great for digging, sandcastles, climbing the dunes or just sunbathing!

Try a new sport at West Wittering Beach

West Wittering isn’t just for lazing about (though that’s perfectly acceptable). It’s also one of the South Coast’s best spots for windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Local surf schools offer lessons and kit hire right on the beach — so if you fancy giving it a go, you can!

If you’d rather stay on land, wander over to East Head, the beautiful National Trust dune spit at the western end of the beach. It’s ideal for a stroll and has big skies and stunning views across Chichester Harbour (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

Stay for sunset

If you can, stick around as the day winds down. The sunsets at West Wittering can be stunning – soft pink skies, calm waves and families packing up for the day. It’s the perfect moment to sit back, wrap up in a hoodie and marvel at the waters.
